The use of the phrase the THIN BLUE LINE was originally used as a reference to the United States Army uniforms of the 1800 – 1900 century in a 1911 poem by Nels Dickmann Anderson. The United States army uniforms at the time were sky blue for privates, dark navy blue for non-commission and officers.

In the 1950’s police Chief Bill Parker of the Los Angeles Police Department in California used and coined the phrase for police “THIN BLUE LINE” as being the barrier between law and order, social and civil anarchy. Towards the earlier part of the 1970’s the coined phrase had already spread all over police departments nationwide.

The “THIN BLUE LINE” is now a sign of solidarity and show of support for the police and law enforcement community.

The THIN BLUE LINE represents the Law Enforcement who daily protect our nation. They are Courageous and Compassionate, Fearless and Fair, Brave and Benevolent. Prepared to Save, Ready to Serve, Willing to Protect… even if it means giving their life for yours.

The BLACK BACKGROUND is a constant reminder of all fallen officers. A reminder of all the sacrifices, a reminder that we will never forget, and a reminder that we are never alone.

The BLUE LINE is what Police stand on and protect. The barrier between anarchy and a civilized society… between order and chaos… between respect for decency and lawlessness… between good and evil.
